Spurs spent the majority of the season in the top four, however a final day defeat against West Ham, resulted in them finishing fifth. Sunderland had a dreadful season as they were relegated after only managing to gain 15 points through out the season. Other newly promoted clubs West ham and Wigan faired much better as they both finished in the top half of the table. Newcastle had a dreadful start to the season; however after parting company with Graham Souness, they made a remarkable recovery as Glenn Roeder took charge, finishing the season in 7th position. Portsmouth were unimpressive through the first and most of the second half of the season, however a late run inspired by their new manager Harry Redknapp helped them to survival. Birmingham City and West Brom were both relegated at the end of the season back into the championship.
