Manchester United started off the season where they had left it off, with an impressive 2-0 victory over Newcastle. However Newcastle gained momentum after the defeat as they had successive victories over Derby, Tottenham and Coventry to go top of the table.
The opening weeks produced the best match of the season as Arsenal beat Charlton 5-3 at Highbury as Patrick Viera and Thierry Henry scored two goals a piece. Leicester City were impressive during the early stages of the season with victories over Ipswich, Southampton and Chelsea. Manchester United recorded their first league defeat since February as Arsenal narrowly beat them 1-0 in October; however the Reds emphatically recovered the following week as the battered Southampton 5-0.
Jimmy Floyd Hasslebank won the golden boot as top scorer in the premiership during this season, scoring 23 goals. Four of those goals came in the match between Chelsea and Coventry, in which Chelsea hammered them 6-1.
At the beginning of November, one of the greatest ever premiership matches was witnessed, as Leeds United came from behind to beat Liverpool 4-3 at Elland Road, this was arguably Mark Viduka’s greatest moment in football as he scored all of Leed’s four goals.
A new partnership was formed at the Riverside as Bryan Robson and Terry Venables became joint managers, at this point Middlesbrough were bottom of the premiership.
After an impressive start, Leeds were looking to strengthen their team and they bought Rio Ferdinand for £18 Million from West ham United. Arsenal had a mixed early season, they had emphatically thumped Newcastle 5-0 and Leicester 6-1, and however a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool was unprecedented. Manchester United dropped two points in a 2-2 draw at Charlton and crucially lost 1-0 at home to Liverpool. However they were clinging on to the top spot. Manchester United reached the Promised Land in February as the gap severely widened between Manchester United and Arsenal. United convincingly beat Arsenal 6-1 to extend the lead at the top to 16 points. No team could realistically catch Manchester united, and they were crowned champions as early as on the 14th of April as they beat Coventry 4-2 with five matches remaining. Ipswich’s seasons went much better than predicted as they finished fourth, which was helped by brilliant victories between Tottenham, Leeds United and Everton.
Manchester united ended the season ten points clear of Arsenal and Liverpool ended the season at third.
The relegated teams included Coventry, Bradford and Manchester City.  Ipswich’s Marcus Stewart had an impressive season as he came runner up in the chase of the golden boot with 19 goals and Mark Viduka came third with 17 goals scored.
