Chelsea set the standard at the beginning of the 2005-06 season, picking up where they left off. Hernan Crespo scored a late winner for them against newly promoted Wigan. Charlton were the surprise team as they raced to the top of the table by then end of August, this was largely helped by 7 goals coming from newly signed Darren Bent. Chelsea strengthened their side further with the arrival of Shaun Wright Phillips and Michael Essien. They took a commanding 13 point lead by November; however Manchester United came back as they beat the league leaders, Chelsea, 1-0 courtesy of an early Darren Fletcher goal. Tottenham were in outstanding form, largely thanks to Robbie Keane and Mido. Spurs spent the majority of the season in the top four, however a final day defeat against West Ham, resulted in them finishing fifth. Sunderland had a dreadful season as they were relegated after only managing to gain 15 points through out the season. Other newly promoted clubs West ham and Wigan faired much better as they both finished in the top half of the table. Newcastle had a dreadful start to the season; however after parting company with Graham Souness, they made a remarkable recovery as Glenn Roeder took charge, finishing the season in 7th position. Portsmouth were unimpressive through the first and most of the second half of the season, however a late run inspired by their new manager Harry Redknapp helped them to survival. Birmingham City and West Brom were both relegated at the end of the season back into the championship.
Chelsea were always in pole position to win the title and they did so with few matches remaining. In total they got 91 points which was eight points better than second place, Manchester United.
After an impressive 2004-05 campaign, Everton were terrible during the first half of the season, however they picked themselves up to finish 11th position.
Arsenal reached fourth despite not performing well through most of the season. Blackburn and Tottenham both claimed UEFA Cup positions.
Thierry Henry was once again top goalscorer with Ruud Van Nistelrooy coming second in the goal scoring charts.
