Liverpool kick started the season in spectacular form as they thumped Crystal palace 6-1. One of the matches of the season came during the first week as Tottenham beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-3, with one of Tottenham’s goals scored by Jurgen Klinsmann who joined Spurs from Monaco for only £2 million in the summer and he became a huge success at White Hart lane. Ossie Ardiles however only lasted two months of the season as manager with Gerry Francis taking over the post. Everton’s start to the season was very poor as they went through a run of only one win in fourteen matches. Mike Walker left the post as manager of Everton and was replaced by Joe Royle who got off to a flyer as Everton beat local rivals, Liverpool, 2-0. Liverpool however recovered as they beat Arsenal, with new youngster, Robbie Fowler, scoring a hat trick in four minutes.
Blackburn came into the season as serious title contenders and they broke the British transfer record for a second time as they purchased Chris Sutton for £5 million from Norwich. He formed a deadly partnership with Alan Shearer up front. Newcastle started the season at the top of the league, with Andy Cole banging in goals from left, right and centre. However Cole transferred from Newcastle to Manchester united for £7 million. Cole and Manchester United were in great form as they set a new premiership record by thrashing Ipswich 9-0 in February with Cole scoring an astonishing five goals.
Cantona’s premiership season ended early in shame as he was sent off in a match against Crystal place in January, as he was walking off the pitch he was verbally abused by a Palace fan, which prompt Cantona to attack him. Cantona was banned for nine months and fined £20,000, this seriously dented United’s title hopes. Blackburn was clear favorites to win the title and with only six matches remaining, they were eight points clear. Manchester United clawed back up the league, and the gap was only two points before the last match of the season, United had to win to stand any chance of winning the league and had to hope Blackburn failed to win their match. Blackburn lost 2-1 to Liverpool however they were still crowned champions despite the defeat s Manchester United drew 1-1 to West ham.
Leicester City’s first season in the premiership ended with disaster, Leicester remained in the bottom two positions through out the season and were relegated at the beginning of April, in total they only managed 29 points from their 42 matches.
