Newly promoted Charlton got off to a flying start as they comfortably beat Southampton 5-0 in the second week of the season. Tottenham replaced Christian Gross with former Arsenal manager, George Graham. Ruud Gullit took over the Newcastle job following Kenny Dalglish’s departure. Gullit’s team got off to a great start as they won their first four matches under him as manager. Paul Merson moved for £6 Million from Middlesbrough to Aston Villa. Villa won their first match 2-0 to Wimbledon and they were league leaders after two months, four points ahead of second place, Manchester United. After a slow start, Liverpool began to show good form as they beat Nottingham Forest 5-1, with four goals coming from Michael Owen. However the glory did not last for long as Liverpool were humiliatingly beaten by Leicester and Derby County. On 7th Novemeber, Aston Villa were still top, still unbeaten and they paraded their new £5 million signing from Coventry, Dion Dublin. Dublin scored twice on his debut as Villa beat Tottenham 3-2; however Villa eventually lost 4-2 to Liverpool at Villa Park in Gerrard Houllier’s first match in charge of Liverpool. In the weekend prior to Christmas, Manchester lost 3-2 at home to Middlesbrough, which was to be their last defeat of the season as they embarked on a 33 match unbeaten run. Chelsea went to the top of the league at the end of 1998 as they beat Tottenham 2-0, which was the first time in nine years, they had been top, however Aston Villa reclaimed the top spot the following weekend.
Chelsea broke a club record by being unbeaten for 20 matches as they beat Newcastle 1-0 in January which also put them back on the top of the table.
Manchester United signed new striker, Dwight Yorke and it made an immediate impact as United beat Leicester 6-2 with Yorke scoring a great hat- trick. Things got even better for United as they thrashed Nottingham forest 8-1, with 2 goals coming from Yorke, Andy Cole and four goals coming from Ole Gunner Solskjaer.
Aston Villa however collapsed as they led the premiership for so long early on. Leeds United improved as the season surpassed and were challenging late on for the top spot, on 24th April they became the eighth team that season to claim the top spot. However Manchester United regained the top spot the following weekend. The Premiership’s climax drew to a close on the 16th of May, when goals by Andy Cole and David Beckham helped Manchester United beat Tottenham to secure them as champions, coming only one point clear of Arsenal. Chelsea and Leeds finished off the season third and fourth respectively.
