Manchester United started off the season where they left it off, they beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 and from then on they were almost unbeatable. An old favorite of Newcastle, Bobby Robson, took over as manager from Ruud Gullit, however his honeymoon period as boss did not even begin as Manchester United thrashed Newcastle 5-1, with Andy Cole scoring four goals against his former team. However Manchester United stumbled badly, as they were thumped 5-0 against Chelsea, this was then followed up by a 3-1 defeat against Tottenham.
Leeds United’s season got off to a tremendous start, with David O’Leary as their new manager, his young side won 14 of their opening 19 matches which put them at pole position of the league. They stumbled to Arsenal at the end of 1999 as they lost 2-0.
In February, Glenn Hoddle was installed as the new Tottenham manager, and the response was immediate as Spurs thrashed Southampton 7-2 as Stefan Iverson scored a hat trick for Spurs.
Manchester united continued their dazzling performances, with their final defeat of their season coming against Newcastle in February they remained unbeaten. In April they convincingly beat West ham 7-1 and with few weeks to spare on the 22nd April, they won their sixth title in eight seasons when they comfortably beat Southampton 3-1. They were clear of Arsenal by 18 points come the end of the season as the Gunners finished in second place.
Newly promoted side, Watford, had a miserable season in the premiership as they ended it finishing rock bottom and they took Sheffield Wednesday with them into Premiership exile. However, Bradford City, who had been in the bottom three for the vast majority of the season, managed to defeat Liverpool 1-0, while Wimbledon lost 2-0 against Southampton and instead of Bradford going down, Wimbledon took their place as they dropped out of the top flight after spending 14 years in the premiership.
Sunderland were extremely impressive during the season as they finished in 7th place and their leading marksman, Kevin Phillips scored a cracking 30 goals, which in turn won him the golden boot award as top scorer.
Leeds United ended up third which earned them a birth into the Champions league the following season.
