1999 – 2000 Season – Great Players

Kevin Phillips
Clubs – Sunderland, Southampton, Aston Villa
The 1999/2000 season saw Kevin Phillips emerge as the premier league’s leading goal scorer with 30 goals. His bundle of goals did not just help Sunderland reach 7th in the premiership, he was also awarded with the European Golden Boot as he was the leading goal scorer in Europe and his tremendous goal scoring form earned him a place in the England squad. In total Phillips played 207 games for Sunderland and scored 113 goals for them, that averages out to more than a goal every two matches. In 2001 he moved to Southampton after Sunderland were relegated before moving to Aston Villa at the start of the 2005/06 season.

 

Paolo di Canio
Clubs – Sheffield Wednesday, West Ham, Charlton
Between the years, 1997-1999, Di Canio played some outstanding football for Sheffield Wednesday, his passion for the game shined through the premiership. However he was sold in January 1999 to West ham, which proved to be a crucial signing for the Hammers. He scored one of the premierships greatest ever goals during the 1999/2000 season against Wimbledon and was one of the leading goal scorers in the premiership with 16 goals. He was voted West ham player of the year by the fans and helped West ham reach 5th position in the premiership, which in turn earned them a birth in the UEFA Cup. He played for Charlton during the 2003-04 season. 

 

Dwight Yorke
Clubs – Aston Villa, Manchester United. Blackburn, Birmingham
After spending nine years in the Midlands at Villa Park, Yorke moved to Manchester United for £12.6 million. His four year spell at Old Trafford at ended in 2002 as he was playing a bit part role with the club. In total his stats are impressive, scoring 47 goals in his 95 appearances for the club. His finest season at Old Trafford was the 99-2000 campaign; he scored 20 premiership goals which meant he was third top scorer in the premier league.
